French onion dip

The dream dip for French onion soup lovers!

I promise this will become your new dip obsession ! Yes caramelising onion is a bit of the time investment but this stuff is so good it’s absolutely worth it 😇 perfect for a sharing appetiser if you are having guests or  just all for yourself like I did 😉

🧅Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 2 onions

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 1/2 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • Fresh thyme

  • 1 tbsp white wine

  • 1 tsp mustard

  • 80g cream cheese

  • 100g shredded Gruyère/mozzarella

🧅Method

  • Add the butter to a pan and bring to medium heat so it melts. Add the finely sliced onion, thyme and garlic and toss to coat with the butter

  • Cook the onions, stirring often, until they have softened, about 15 to 20 minutes. Add the wine to deglaze the pan. Cook for 10 more minutes while intermittently stirring until the onions start to brown and become soft

  • Add the sugar and salt and cook until the onions are well browned, about 10 more minutes. You can cover it with a lid and stir every 5 minutes

  • In a separate bowl mix the mozzarella, cream cheese and mustard. Add the caramelised onions and mix well

  • Bake in the oven at 180C grill on for 10-15 minutes until the cheese melts

FAQS and Tips

  • If you want to speed the process up you can first cook the onions in a bowl covered with cling film for 10 minutes in the microwave to soften them up
