Cheddar cheese twists

A great no fuss party snack!

These cheese twists or straws are so simple to make and are guranteed to be a crowd pleaser! They absolutely bursting with peppery, cheesy flavor thanks to fresh jalapeños and cheddar cheese grated right into the pastry. The puff pastry bakes up so beautifully with a gorgeous crispy cheesy crust thanks to the cheddar cheese and a mild-to-moderate heat with plenty of zesty fresh jalapeño flavor.

You just really need 10 minutes of prep and 3 ingredients: cheddar, jalapeños and store bought puff pastry. And if you are feeling creative you can switch up the cheese or mix them up, other great alternatives to cheddar are Parmesan, Manchego, Colby or smoked Gouda. You can also add additional spices such as Mexican seasoning, or different herbs.

These spicy cheesy straws are delcious on their down but if you are looking for dipping ideas I recommend making a simple coriander ali oli. You can just blend mayo, some garlic and coriander and voila, you have the perfect dipping sauce!

🍽️ 6 portions

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of puff pastry dough (fresh or frozen, can be GF)

  • Jarred jalapeños peppers, to taste

  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated

Method

  • Roll out the puff pastry on a flat surface parchment paper. Spread 3/4 of the grated cheddar cheese and lay out your jalapeno peppers (as many as you want depending on your spice tolerance).

  • Fold the puff pastry in half and then press together firmly with a rolling pin.

  • Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on the pastry. Optional: you can brush the puff pastry with melted butter for adding a lovely golden color when you bake them.

  • Cut the pastry into equal strips, about 3 cm thick, carefully twist each strip in opposite direction into spiral, pinching both ends then transfer on the prepared baking sheet.

  • Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180C for approximately 20 minutes or until the cheese melts and turns nice and golden. Alternatively you can bake these in the airfryer at 190C for 12-15min.

  • Allow the cheese twists to cool for 5-10min before serving, they will crisp up as they cool.

FAQS and Tips

  • How long do the cheese straws last after baking them? They are best enjoyed freshly baked, however, they keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days in airtight container. I recommned reheatijng them in the airfryer or oven AT 190C for 5 min before consuming them so they crisp up again
